Description: This archive of papers was donated by Marcella Hempel to the National Gallery of Australia in 1990-91. The papers include her professional documents from her education as a master weaver and teaching career in Germany from 1945 to 1952. The documents are mainly in German and include social security ID card, employment book, certifications of her education and appointment as master weaver, offer letters for teaching positions, resignation letters, press clippings and lesson plans. Later papers are in English from her time in Australia from 1954. They include docket/invoice books with records of sales and commissions, notebooks with designs, patterns, calculations and samples of weaves, photographs and lesson plans. Her notebooks include designs and calculations for the Qantas travel rugs and the gold-medal winning weave.
